Employee Benefits at AU

Along with a competitive benefits package, Augustana University provides its employees with additional advantages that provide support and enhance the campus community.

For employees who work 35 or more hours per week or faculty members who teach 6/7 time or more, benefits at AU include free admission to most athletics events and theatre productions, free parking on campus, access to Augustana Recreational Services, career exploration resources and access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Health Insurance

Eligible employees and dependents may participate in the insurance plan provided by Augustana. Coverage is effective on the date of hire.

Health coverage includes services such as:

  • Office visits
  • Surgical services
  • Mental health services
  • Physical exams
  • Pharmacy expenses

Dental Insurance

All qualifying employees and their dependents (if applicable) will be covered and become eligible on the first day of the month following the date of employment. This is a voluntary plan for which the employee pays the total cost of the premium.

Dental coverage includes services such as:

  • Diagnostic & preventive services
  • Basic services
  • Endodontics & periodontics 
  • Major services 
  • Orthodontics 
Dental Insurance

Vision Insurance

All qualifying employees and their dependents (if applicable) will be covered and become eligible on the first day of the month following the date of employment. This is a voluntary plan for which the employee pays the total cost of the premium.

Vision Insurance includes benefits such as:

  • Annual eye exams
  • Lenses
  • Annual allowance for contact lenses 
  • Annual allowance for frames
  • Per eye discount on LASIK & related procedures

Short-Term Disability

Administrators | Coaches | Faculty

Augustana provides 100% of an employee's salary for up to 90 days with no elimination period. The university provides this benefit at no cost to the employee.

Support Staff

Augustana provides 100% of an employee's salary for up to 48 days following a 6-week elimination period during which accrued sick time and vacation time may be used.

Long-Term Disability

Total disability insurance goes into effect on the employee's first day of employment. Disability benefits take effect after a 90-day period of total disability. The total disability benefit is 60% of your monthly salary at the time your disability occurred. The TIAA-CREF contributions continue to your retirement plan as a function of this coverage.

Augustana provides this benefit at no cost to the employee.
 

Long-Term Disability

Life Insurance

All eligible employees have life insurance equal to one year's base salary with a maximum of $50,000 and minimum of $15,000. The employee's spouse has $5,000 of life insurance coverage. Dependents of the employee (more than 14 days and less than 19 years old or, if a student, age 23) are covered for $2,500 of life insurance coverage.

Augustana provides this benefit at no cost to the employee.

Additional life insurance is available to employees and their dependents for a nominal monthly premium.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)

If an employee sustains an accidental bodily injury, and the injury directly causes the loss of loss, eyesight or a body part, a payment will be made according to the loss based on the employee's life insurance coverage.

Augustana provides this benefit at no cost to the employee.

Additional AD&D is available to employees for a nominal monthly premium.

Retirement: TIAA-CREF

Full-time employees are required to participate in the TIAA-CREF retirement program on the first day of employment. All employees become vested in the retirement program after 23 months of plan participation.

Contributions are as follows:

Years of Participation: 1-5

  • Employee Contributes: 4%
  • Augustana Contributes: 4%

Years of Participation: 6-10

  • Employee Contributes: 4%
  • Augustana Contributes: 6%

Years of Participation: 11-15

  • Employee Contributes: 5%
  • Augustana Contributes: 6%

Years of Participation: 15+

  • Employee Contributes: 5%
  • Augustana Contributes: 7%

Tuition Assistance

Augustana's mission is to provide an education of enduring worth and, as such, believes its employees and their families should be able to utilize that which they work so hard to provide to others. The Augustana Tuition Assistance Benefit Program allows employees to go back to school, add a bachelor’s or master’s degree, take courses they’re interested in or support their families at a discounted rate. AU also participates in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and Tuition Exchange (TE) programs.

Tuition Assistance is allowed in the following manner:

*A percent of full tuition refers to the benefit, not the cost. If tuition is $10,000/semester and you are at 25%, your benefit is $2,500 for the semester.

**Tuition Assistance will not apply to more than seven credit hours per semester. If the student is a full-time student, the cost of these credit hours is applied to the tuition costs.
