MSN FAQs

There are two tracks available: the adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AG-ACNP) and the adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist (AG-CNS). 

• The AG-ACNP specialized in caring for patients ages 13 and older with complex acute and chronic medical conditions in the inpatient health care setting.
• The AG-CNS is a clinical practice expert, an educator, researcher and consultant who influences the three spheres of practice: patient care, nursing and systems.

A post-master's certificate is available in both the adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AG-ACNP) and adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist (AG-CNS) tracks starting Summer 2023.

The program is delivered online (synchronous and asynchronous). Three intensive immersion sessions will occur on campus in Sioux Falls during the second year of the program.

The program takes two years to complete. The post-master’s certificates take one year to complete.

The AG-ACNP track requires two years of clinical experience in an acute care setting; critical care experience is preferred. The AG-CNS track requires two years of clinical experience.

No, clinical hours toward an MSN must be completed separately from your current employment hours.

Students can begin the program without selecting a specialty track. Students must choose their track by the beginning of the spring semester in their first year to allow time to plan for clinical placements. 

The faculty in the program will assist you with this process, working with each student within their chosen specialty track and focus area.
