Parking & Traffic

The Augustana University campus is centrally located in Sioux Falls within walking or biking distance of banks, grocery stores, restaurants and other common destinations. The Sioux Area Metro (SAM) transit system also has a bus stop located on campus. While having a car can be helpful for getting around, it is not necessary to get places.

An Augustana University parking permit is required to park in parking lots on campus. The university will ticket and tow all "non-permit" vehicles parked illegally in the university lots to protect space for vehicles with permits.

Visitor parking is designated by signs in some parking lots, but is limited. Non-permitted parking is allowed during events on campus in all academic parking lots and the Elmen Center parking lot. Vehicles blocking roadways and sidewalks, parked in the wrong lot, or otherwise improperly parked, will be ticketed and subject to towing. Visitor parking stalls are reserved exclusively for this purpose. Under no circumstances are current registered students considered visitors.

The Augustana Department of Campus Safety enforces all parking regulations on campus property. The City of Sioux Falls enforces all parking ordinances related to city street parking. Both Campus Safety and the Sioux Falls Police Department (SFPD) enforce violations of city ordinance on campus (i.e. parking in a fire lane, handicapped parking violations, etc.).

Augustana provides designated parking spaces for motorcycles and scooters, as well as bike racks. Only university-owned or approved vehicles (maintenance, ground, custodial and outside contractors) are authorized to drive on campus non-curbed fire lanes, sidewalks and grounds. A violation of this regulation will result in a fine.

Bicycle Safety

• Register your bicycle with Sioux Falls Police, which is free and significantly increases the chances of a bicycle being returned if stolen or lost.
• Secure your bike in a well lit public bike rack.
• Don't park your bike in a location that obstructs pedestrian traffic or access to a building.
• Report suspicious activity/persons loitering around bike racks.
• Use a high quality lock — a "U type" lock is recommended.
• For bikes with quick-release wheels, release the front wheel and include it with the rear wheel and frame when locking your bike to the rack.
• Bikes without quick-release wheels should be secured by putting the lock through both a tire and the frame when locking your bike to the rack.
• Use a cable or chain at least 3/8 inch in diameter.
• Use a key with a 3/8 inch hardened shackle with heel and toe locking.
• Pull up all slack in the cable or chain and make sure the lock is as high off the ground as possible.

Report any missing or stolen bikes to Campus Safety. Every year, Campus Safety collects found or abandoned bicycles on campus — retaining them for six months and then donating them to charity.
